OBITUARY:

Mrs Rosa M. Smith, granddaughter of Oregon pioneer George Kirby Gay, died Saturday night in a Salem hospital. She was 87. Born in Yamhill County near Hopewell, she was one of 16 children born to Hyram B. Simkins and Mary Ann Gay Simkins. Her grandfather, George Kirby Gay, was well-known for constructing the first brick house in Yamhill County. He is mentioned often in Oregon history as being one of the early settlers in Oregon. He was with the Oregon delegation who helped form the Oregon territorial government which later made Oregon a state at Champoeg. Mrs Smith had lived in the Salem area most of her life. She married Michael Smith at McMinnville in 1898 and the couple resided at Oregon City for about 10 years after the marriage. Smith died in 1921 and Mrs Smith moved back to Salem where she had been residing with a daughter, Mrs Mabel Frizzell, 970 15th St NE, until being admitted to the hospital. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs Jane Williamson, Portland, and Mrs Florence Elwood, San Diego, Calif, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Tuesday in the Clough-Barrick Chapel in Salem with Dr S. Raynor Smith officiating. Interment will be in Zena Cemetery.
