Helen Purvine
June 29, 1916 – May 11, 2007
SEATTLE – Helen J. Purvine, 90 passed away May 11, 2007. Helen, a first generation American, was born June 29, 1916 in New York, N.Y., the daughter of Charles and Julia Lucas. During WWII she worked as an executive secretary to a general on Governors Island, New York where she met and married Maj. Paul L. Purvine in 1943. She traveled all over the world as an army wife and was one of the first dependents into Okinawa after WWII. The family settled in the Seattle area in 1958.
Helen loved books and was an avid reader. She worked for the Seattle Public Library as head clerk at the Ballard Branch until her retirement in 1990. She was active at Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church, Seattle, where she was a member of the Altar Guild.
She was also active with the Women’s Auxiliary of the Seattle Power Squadron and a volunteer at the Pac Med gift shop. She leaves family, friends, and colleagues a legacy of humor, keen intelligence, and an amazing sense of practicality.
Her husband, Paul preceded her in death February 19, 2003. She is survived by sons, Dennis (Margaret), Stephen (Diana), and Philip (Sandra); 5 grandchildren; and Buster the cat. The burial service will be held Monday, May 21, 11:30 a.m. at the Spring Valley Cemetery in Zena, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spring Valley Cemetery Fund, c/o Eleanor Miller, 1440 Chemeketa St. NE Salem, OR 98301.
