OBITUARY:

At 5 o’clock tomorrow morning Undertaker R.L. Chapman will leave Dallas for the Peedee country to consign to its last resting place the remains of one of Polk county’s native sons, a man known, honored and respected by all the older residents for his many admiral qualities, for his wisdom, and his fair dealing as man to man. For the last 15 years he had been an earnest and consistent member of the Baptist church, and in following out the principles of that organization there was none more steadfast in his duty. His passing will be seriously regretted by many old time friends all over the county and his remains will be followed to the grave tomorrow by many who have proved to themselves the value of his friendship. Walker Bevens was born in Polk county near Airlie some 60 years ago and since that time has continued to be a resident of this county, passing away at his home in Peedee yesterday morning at 11 o’clock from consumption, from which he had been a sufferer for several years. It was only lately that he had been compelled to take to his bed. Some months ago he tried the coast climate for relief, but found none. Mr Bevens some 25 years ago espoused Miss Martha Crowley, and the result of this union was five children – Ed ; Mrs Lillie Sloper of Kings Valley; Mrs Joyce McCaleb of Kings Valley; Opal and Theodore at the home farm. He also leaves to mourn his loss the following brothers and sisters: Truman Bevens of Kings Valley; Speed Bevens of Buena Vista; Commodore Bevens of Elk City; Mrs Marsh Simpson of Elk City; Mrs Reuben Hall of Buena Vista; Freeman Bevens of Corvallis, and Jefferson Bevens of Dallas. Willard Bevens died at Buena Vista some two years ago, and Theodore, a twin brother of Commodore, passed away about three years ago. At the time of going to press it is not known what minister will officiate at the burial.
