OBITUARY:
Gary Warner Loso, September 21, 1935-July 5, 2005
Monmouth – Gary Warner Loso of Monmouth died peacefully at home at age 69 on July 5, 2005. A loving and faithful husband, devoted father, contributing citizen, and a teacher who gave his best, he will be greatly missed. Born in Lincoln, Neb, on September 21, 1935 to Dale and Leola Loso, Gary was the oldest of four boys. His family moved to San Diego when he was three, and Gary spent his childhood days fishing and exploring the open space in the southern California lakes and canyons. A graduate of Hoover High School in San Diego, Gary enlisted and served in the US Army from 1955-1957 on active duty. He received an honorable discharge in 1963. In 1959, Gary graduated from San Diego State University with a BA degree in Personnel Management, and married his sweetheart, Mary Ver Steeg, an elementary teacher. Gary worked for San Diego County as a Welfare Department Social Worker and a Probation Officer from 1960-1966. After obtaining his teaching credential, Gary taught history, economics, and geography in the social studies departments in the Grossmont Union High School District from 1967-1996. In 1987, he earned a Master’s Degree in Education from US International University in San Diego. Gary was also a dedicated high school soccer coach and instrumental in obtaining soccer funds in the 1970’s so that high school soccer teams could compete in games and tournaments. He coached his own son and daughter and enjoyed sharing the sport he loved so much with many young people. Gary also formed an international association for soccer coaches and received his referee training from the German Referee School. Gary attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Salem and was a former member of the First Unitarian Church in San Diego, California. He had a passion for politics and was a lifelong, ardent Democrat and a member of the American Civil Liberties Union. He read and collected books on politics, history, and philosophy. Gary appreciated folk music and the symphony, and he and his wife, Mary, enjoyed local concerts and the Oregon Symphony. Gary loved the outdoors and ran daily to keep fit. His favorite weekend activity was fishing, especially for bass. He looked forward to summer camping trips with his wife and two children. Gary was an avid fan and supporter of many sports, especially soccer, track and field, and football, and of Oregon State University and San Diego State University athletics. He was a loving husband to his wife, Mary, and they enjoyed 46 years of marriage. Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Leola Loso and his brother, Keith Loso. Survivors include his father, Dale Loso of San Diego; his wife, Mary; their daughter, Yvonne Alaman, son-in-law, Henry Alaman, and grandsons, Brian and Steve Alaman of Philomath; son, Keith Loso and daughter-in-law, Dana Loso of Corvallis; brothers, Dennis Loso of Escondido, Calif, and Jerry Loso and sister-in-law, Sylvia of Myrtle Creek.
