OBITUARY:
Christopher Columbus or “Lum” Yeater as he was familiarly called, died at his home in Monmouth early Saturday evening after a sudden and brief illness. In company with Harold Haley of Portland he was absent over the previous week end on a deer hunt in the region of the headwaters of the Luckiamute. They got a deer but camped out two or three nights and on arriving home he went Tuesday to haul wood from his farm to town and got thoroughly wet and cold in the rain. He was of a rugged constitution but this exposure proved too much for him and he developed an inflammation in the abdomen and grew steadily worse.
C. C. Yeater was a native of Polk county, born May 23, 1866. During the last several years he lived on a farm nine miles west of Monmouth. He was the son of James and Margaret Yeater who were early pioneers in this country. He was married on May 19, 1895, to Miss Eleanor Owen who survives him, also two daughters, Miss Mabel Yeater of Portland and Miss Helen Yeater who teaches at Salado. One grandson, James Chatzauk of Monmouth, a sister, Kate Smith of Portland and two brothers, John and William Yeater of Monmouth, also survive him.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church under the direction of the Smith funeral chapel, and interment was in the Smith cemetery at Lewisville. The crowd which assembled at the funeral services was one of the largest in years. Rev. Victor P. Morris officiated and called attention to the fact that Mr Yeater in his younger days was baptised by immersion under the hand of Rev C. C. Poling, father of Dan Poling, the present head of the National society of Christian Endeavor.
