OBITUARY: 
Mrs Bonnie Smith, pioneer Polk county school teacher and a resident of Oregon since 1888, passed away in Portland Thursday morning after an illness of five days. She was born in Iredell county, North Carolina, December 12, 1865, moving to Iowa at the age of seven and coming to Oregon with her parents, Mr and Mrs D.C. Swann in 1888. She received her teacherís training in Iowa, later attending Oregon Normal school at Monmouth and taught in both Iowa and Oregon. She was united in marriage to a native Oregonian, William Wright Smith of Lewisville October 18, 1893, and they lived on a farm there for many years. Mr Smith passed away in 1916. When Camp Adair was formed and the home place sold, Mrs Smith moved to Portland. At the time of her death she was a member of Rose City Methodist church, Portland. She was always interested in church and community activities. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs Cecil Embree, Lodi, Calif, Mrs J.E. Weaver and Mrs J. Paul Doughty, Portland, and Mrs Leland Prather, Buena Vista; two sisters, Miss Mattie Swann of Portland, Mrs Lela Abrams of Tillamook; one brother, L.L. Swann of Albany, eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Services were held Saturday, May 14, at the Henkle and Bollman chapel in Dallas, with Rev V.A. Ballantyne Jr of Portland officiating. Final rites were at the Lewisville cemetery near Monmouth. Itemizer Observer, Thursday, May 19, 1949, II:3:3
