OBITUARY:
Mary Richards, July 21, 1918-April 5, 1997
Mary Louise Richards of Monmouth died April 5 at her home. She was 78. Born in Corvallis to William L. and Edith Belle Rabb Powell, she grew up on Kiger Island, south of Corvallis on the family fruit and nut ranch. After her marriage to Ralph Richards on May 4, 1940 at her parents’ home, the couple lived by Wagner Butte south of Corvallis until they purchased the Suver Store in 1947 with her in-laws, Walter and Henrietta Richards. She ran the Richards store for 50 years, 25 of those years by herself. Her efforts in designing and putting together the Polk County booth at the State Fair for 25 years won her many top awards. One of her major joys in life was the creation of her museum at the store, and she enjoyed visiting with the many people who came through the door. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, doing ceramics, refurbishing dolls, and writing poems and stories. She was a 4-H leader and a member of the Willamette Grange, Polk County Museum Commission, Polk County Historical Society, Crafty Homemakers, Extension Club, Western Horseman Association of Oregon and Polk County Saddle-ites Horse Club. She enjoyed parades and costumes, and loaning costumes and display items, dolls, and ceramics. Survivors include her son, Gary Lynn Richards of Monmouth; daughters, Judith Louise Steele of Independence and Cynthia Ann Gardner of Corvallis; brother, Richard Owen Powell of Salinas, Calif, and William Raab Powell of Waldport; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A daughter, Virginia Annette Richards, preceded her in death. Graveside services were held April 8 at Smith Cemetery in Monmouth. Friends and family gathered at the Richards Store and museum immediately following the service for a celebration of her life. Farnstrom Mortuary handled the arrangements.
