OBITUARY:
Mrs Ethel Pearl Jones, wife of George B. Jones of Elkins, and prominent in Farmer’s union circles of the state, died in Willamette sanitarium, Salem, Monday afternoon at 1:50. It was believed that she had passed the critical stage in complications which developed following a successful major operation on Wednesday of last week, and the end came suddenly and unexpectedly. Mrs Jones weas secretary-treasurer of the Farmers’ Educational and Cooperative union of America, having served efficiently in that capacity for about six and one-half years, and was editor of the Union News, a monthly publication of the order. Preceding her state work ahe was active in county affairs of the union and a leader in her home community. Mrs Jones was 43 years old. She was born at Bridgeport, this county, December 16, 1884, and spent her life in this part of Polk county. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Brown. She was married to mr Jones in Independence in 1906. They resided here for a time, and then went to the Elkins district where they established their home on a farm, where they have since resided. There are two sons, Alfred, 19, and Leroy, 16. Funeral services were held at the Evangelical church in Monmouth Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock under the direction of the Keeney funeral home. Rev Chester Gates of Portland, a friend of Mrs Jones since girlhood, officiated, assisted by Rev A. Ballantyne of Lewisville. Mrs Jones had been identified with the church for many years and Mr Gates was eulogistic of the life she had led and in her faith which had never wavered. There was a profusion of beautiful flowers, and the church was taxed beyond its capacity by the friends who were anxious to do honor to one who had occupied such a warm place in their hearts, and who had been so generous in the use of the helping hand. Men and women, prominent in the affairs of the union from various parts of the state, were in attendance at the service. Among these were H.R. Richards of The Dalles, president, and Mrs Richards; Herbert Egbert of The Dalles, former president; Mr and Mrs C.F. Emerson of The Dalles; W.I. Seals, Mr and Mrs H.C. Jackson, Mrs Betty Kappauf, Lane county; John Wodtli, Mr and Mrs S.B. Holt, Mr and Mrs Shepherd, Lane county; L.H. McBee, vice president of the organization, Dallas, and A.G. Rempel, a state director from Rickreall. Committal service was in Smith cemetery, where the father, mother and a sister are interred, and was in charge of Independence circle, Royal Neighbors of America, of which organization Mrs Jones had been a member for several years. Pall bearers were G.G. Hewitt, Roy Pitzer, Thomas McEldowney, Joe Tetherow, A.Z. Tedrow, Walter Roy. Mrs Jones is survived by one sister, Mrs W.H. Harmon of Elkins, and a stepfather C.C. Marks of the same community. Her mother passed away only a few months ago. Relatives of Mrs Jones from outside points were Mr and Mrs Clarence McCready, Mr and Mrs Clifford Raber, Misses Grace and Kathryn Jones, Corvallis; Mr and Mrs F.E. Chambers of Eugene.
