OBITUARY:
Virginia Sue ‘Ginny’ Beaird, December 1, 1940-September 26, 2006.
MONMOUTH – Virginia Sue Beaird, 65, died peacefully Tuesday at Hawthorne House Care Center in Salem, following her eight year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Beatrice, Nebraska to Roy F. and Helen E. (Caruthers) Hubka, Ginny was reared in Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated from Lincoln Northeast High school where she was active in student government, synchronized swimming, and cheerleading. Following her graduation in 1958, she enrolled in the University of Nebraska, majoring in Business Education. She was affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta sorority, served on the Union Board, Tassels, and was a member of the Homecoming Court prior to graduating in 1962.
At the University she met her husband, Jim, and together they moved to Monmouth where Ginny joined the faculty at Falls City High School, teaching English, writing, and business courses until the birth of the first of her four children. Her children were her life. An excellent cook, she shared her passions with her children, each of whom developed their own excellence. Outside the home Ginny was active in Oregon College of Education (now WOU) Women, Monmouth Garden Club, Monmouth-Independence Community Arts Association, Polk County 4-H, and Christ’s Church. Ginny enjoyed her years as 4-H leader and the accomplishments of those in her clothing and cooking clubs. She was elected to two terms on the Central School Board serving as its President during her second term. She was particularly proud of her role in the redesign and addition to Central High School in the early 1980’s. As her children moved on to college, Ginny returned to work on the WOU campus. Working in the Division of Continuing Education, Ginny served as campus coordinator of Elderhostel Programs and secretary to the State Elderhostel Director.
Although she never lost her Cornhusker roots, Ginny was from the very first a devoted Beaver fan and for many years seldom missed a basketball or football game in Corvallis. It is no coincidence that all four children attended OSU. Ginny loved to travel and following retirement set for herself a goal of spending a month in every state. Her home is full of albums in which she carefully documented with photos and momentos her visit to each of the 31 states visited before the onset of her Alzheimer’s Disease. It was on the last of these trips that she heard reference to a proposed gene therapy study at the University of California-San Diego. She traveled immediately to UCSD to volunteer, and in April 2001 became the first to receive this treatment. She considered herself fortunate to contribute in this way.
From that time until her death, she spent each winter in San Diego, participating in periodic follow up evaluations as part of the research. She became active in the Pacific Beach United Methodist Church there and particularly enjoyed working in their mission to serve the homeless, and delivering flowers to members unable to attend regular services. During the six years she returned to San Diego she never missed the Sunday afternoon organ concerts in Balboa Park, each concert was a particular joy for her.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Jim of Monmouth; brother, Larry Hubka and his wife, Katy of Fremont, Nebraska; brother, Rich Hubka and his wife, Teri of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Allison Loeb, her husband, Carl and daughter, Claire of San Anselmo, California; daughter, Susan of Portland; son, Douglas of Eugene; daughter, Sarah of Monmouth; step-daughter, Debra Johnson, her husband, Scott of Athens, Georgia and their children, Lena of Provo, Utah, Doyle of mission in Portugal, and Daily of Athens; and an extended famiuly of aunts and uncles, nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held in Monmouth at Christ’s Church at 10 am, on Friday, October 6, 2006 with a reception following at Gentle House on the WOU campus. Farnstrom Mortuary of Independence is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ivy B. Thomas Educational Fund or the Polk County 4-H Leaders Association.
