1870 IL CENSUS - Jane Atwater, age 44, b. Illinois, is enumerated with Miles L., age 44, occupation farmer, b. Ohio, along with Maria, age 14, Scott, age 12, John, age 9, Sarah, age 4, and George, age 11 months, all born in Illinois.
1880 IL CENSUS - Jane S., age 54 (notation: "not well"), b. Illinois, is enumerated with Miles, age 54, occupation farmer, b. Ohio, along with John, age 19, farm laborer, b. Illinois, Sarah, age 14, b. Illinois, and George, age 10, b. Illinois. Also enumerated with the family is Hester Estman, age 16, domestic servant, b. Illinois.
Died at the family home near McTimmonds Valley, September 13, Mrs. Jane S. Atwater, wife of M.L. Atwater, aged 71 years, 10 months and 13 days. The deceased was born near Springfield, Ill., Nov. 22, 1825. She was a devoted member of the M.E. church at Hamilton, Ill., and her membership was transferred to the M.E. chrch at Lewisville, Polk co., she having come to Oregon in 1890. She leaves a husband and 7 children to mourn her death. The remains were laid to rest in the Montgomery cemetery. Dallas Observer Oct. 8, 1897
