OBITUARY:
Thomas Hart, who died at his residence in Polk county last week, was one of the old pioneers of this country.  He came to Oregon in 1845, and settled on the place on which he died, having resided there contantly for near thirty years.  Until within the last four or five years he made a regular hand on his farm, but since that time he has been quite decrepit, and so childish that his reason had almost departed, so much so that he could not tell his own age, over which there has been considerable difference of opinion, some claiming that he was a hundred, others ninety years old, but from the best information that can be gathered from his relatives, is that he enlisted in the war of 1812 when he was thirty-three [sic] years old, which would make him ninety-five [sic] at the time of his death.  He amassed qute a fortune in his long residence in this State, and at one time he had 2,000 bushels of wheat for which he was offered $5 a bushel.
Oregonian, The (Portland, Oregon) 9 Feb 1874
