OBITUARY: 
Thomas Gross, 69, prominent Polk county farmer, passed away at his home near Airlie March 12, after a week’s illness with influenza pneumonia. Funeral services were held from the Airlie church Saturday afternoon with Rev E.A. Fogg, Evangelical pastor, officiating. Interment was made in the old English cemetery. The Keeney funeral home of Independence was in charge. Mr. Gross was born in Shelby county, Ohio, July 3, 1866, and came west when 20 years old, locating near Pedee. He has lived in the Pedee-Airlie community since that time. He was married to Mary E. Berry, daughter of a prominent pioneer family, at Lewisville in 1901. To this union four daughters were born. 
Mr. Gross is survived by his widow, two daughters, four sisters and three brothers. The daughters are Mrs. Robert K. Harris of Airlie, Mrs. Ray Strickland of Marshfield; sisters, Mrs. Louise King, Mrs. Mary Wood and Mrs. Emma West, all of Portland, Mrs. M. Brinker, Shelby county, Ohio; brothers, Sam and Jake of Portland and Ed of Astoria. 
There are also five granddaughters. Pall bearers were: Ellis Dodson, Loren Cooper, Charles Nendel, D.J. Bolter, W.E. Williams Jr, and Wade Williams.
