OBITUARY:
T. B. Williams, Airlie, Polk Pioneer, Passes.
Born in Tennessee, Come to Oregon When Three Across the Plains.
T. B. Williams, 87, Polk pioneer and almost a lifelong resident of Airlie, died in the Dallas hospital on August 22. He had been in the hospital nearly six months while life’s sands slowly ebbed.
Mr. Williams was born in Tennessee at May Springs, Granger county, May 3, 1842, and he had been a resident of Polk county for more than four score years. Three years later, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Williams and their eight children embarked at St Jo, Missouri, on the overland journey to Oregon. Starting in May it was October 4 before the tedious journey had been completed, with Oregon City as the temporary resting place. Continuing up the valley the elder Williams selected a 640 acre donation land claim lying along the Luckiamute river, where a home was established and where the parents spent their remaining years.
It was likewise on this old homestead that Mr. Williams spent the greater part of his life. For a few years the Williams lived upon a small farm about midway between Independence and Monmouth, going from there back to the old farm which held so many cherished memories for them.
Mrs. Williams died about three years ago, and until feebleness made it necessary that he be cared for Mr. Williams lived alone on the old farm, steadfastly refusing to share the hospitality of his children.
Funeral services were held at the English cemetery, Airlie, Saturday afternoon, and were in charge of C.W. Henkle of Dallas. Dr H. Charles Dunsmore officiated.
Mr. Williams was married to Miss Susan Falkenberg in 1862. Four children were born to them, two of whom survive; Mrs. Dollie Scanlon, Portland, and Miss Nannie Gayeau, Jasper, Oregon. There are also seven grandchildren.
Mr. Williams served as county commissioner and clerk of the school district in which he resided for several years. He manifested a great deal of interest in educational matters. He kept well posted in current affairs, formed opinions on national affairs, and had a keen wit. His was of the old southern democracy. In the later years of his life he became more tolerant in politics, contending tha the voted for the candidate rather than the party. He frankly stated, however, with a twinkle in his eye, “The best men have pretty nearly always been democrats.” Ralph Williams, vice chairman of the Republican national committee, is a nephew, and it was the contention of the deceased that “Ralph” was the only politically foolish member of the Williams family. M.C. Williams of Independence is also a nephew.
