New York), maiden name of mother Orlena Williams; bur English; informant William Staats of Salem.
OBITUARY: 

James Mortimer Staats, aged 86, who was one of the oldest natives of Polk county, passed away at his home in Salem Tuesday after a short illness. Fuenral services were held today at the Keeney funeral parlors in Independence with interment in the English cemetery near Airlie. 
Mr. Staats was born near Airlie May 18, 1848 and spent most of his life there. He engaged in farming and carpenting. He moved to Salem several years ago and has made his home there ever since. His parents, Isaac and Orlena Staats came to Polk County in 1845. He was married to Ann F. Burns, December 5, 1867, and to this union 8 children were born, four of whom survive. They are Mrs. Gertrude Waters of Airlie, Erma Hecker of Albany, Rosco of Independence and I.W. of Salem. There are also two brothers, C.E. Staats of Dallas and A.C. Staats of Airlie.
