OBITUARY:
DROWNED IN LUCKIAMUTE
Louis Wienert of Airlie Loses Life Driving Logs on Flood
The Christmas season for several homes in the vicinity of Airlie was saddened by the accidental death of Louis Wienert, drowned in the Luckiamute Friday. Wienert, and another man named Conn, were running logs sdown the Luckiamute for the Spaulding Lumber Co.
The Luckiamute is not wide enough for rafts, and the custom is to ride single logs down the stream to the Willamette where they are formed into rafts. Wienert and Conn were riding a log down the strream, steering it away from obstructions along the shore with pike poles. Near Ralph Dodson’s place Wienert lost his footing and fell into the water. He struck out for a clump of willows along the stream near by and reached it.
On that side of the stream were considerable under brush and low land and the young man, 21 years of age, strong and powerful, weighing over two hundred pounds, struck out for the other side where there was a better chance to land. He was over confident however, for the current swept him down stream, and around the bend a log jam appeared. Here in the stronger current he was sucked under the logs and lost. At the latest reports his body had not been recovered.
An old resident of the Airlie section, Wienert was popular with all and his death is mourned in many places.
Wienert’s mother is dead but he was one of a family of eight children and members of the family have spent the time that has intervened, along the river trying to recover the body. It has been planned to drag the river twice but both times rain has intervened, swelling the flood to unmanageable proportions.
