OBITUARY:
A Pioneer Passes Away
Jacob Pfau, a resident of Oregon since 1853, died at his home in North Salem late Saturday night, aged 83 years, 15 days. The death of Mr. Pfau was very sudden, and his family was greatly shocked. He had been down town during the day, and appeared in his usual good health. At 10:30 pm he complained of not feeling well, and reclined upon the bed, when he passed away peacefully and without a struggle.
The deceased was born in Germany, of French parentage, on April 18, 1819, and came to the United States in 1847, first settling in Illinois. Attracted by the gold excitement in 1849, he came via the Isthmus of Panama to California, where, after spending a few years in the gold fields, he came to Portland, Oregon, in 1853. He remained in Portland until 1862, when he came to Salem and purchased a farm of 313 acres near Rickreall, where he resided until 1893, when he came to Salem, and has lived here ever since.
On December 5, 1866, Mr. Pfau married Miss Nancy J. Taylor, who crossed the plains from Illinois in 1862. He is survived by a widow and two daughters, Mrs C.W. Stump and Mrs M.I. Copps both of Salem. The deceased was one of those representative, honest and thrifty German citizens who, by economy and industry, made their way in this country until they were numbered among the best and most influential citizens of the country.
Funeral services were conducted at the late home this morning, and burial took place at Rickreall.
