OBITUARY:
DEATH BY ACCIDENT
We are called upon this week to chronicle a very sad affair in the death of William Dempsey, by an accidental shooting. As near as we have been able to gather them the particulars are as follows: That week a party of young men, including William and Frank Dempsey, William Kimsey and Mrs. Shinn went from here to Yaquina on a pleasure excursion. They intended to have a general good time hunting, fishing, etc. Last Monday they killed a bear and Tuesday William Dempsy and William Kimsey went out to fetch it in, and at the same time kill another one if possible. Their digs soon got on the track of one and they began hunting for it. They had separated and after being gone for some time from each other, Mr. Kimsey heard something which he supposed to be a bear in the brush, which was very dense. After groping about for some time he discovered an object in the brush about thirty yards from him and taking it to be the bear used his gun, a Henry rifle, fired and shot it. The object came down and repairing to the spot he discovered to his dismay, that he had shot his comrade, Mr. Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey who was gasping for breath, and who died almost as soon as he reached him, never speaking, to Mr. Kimsey’s knowledge. He made the matter known as soon as possible at the camp, when they procured some straw and blankets, which were wet with water, the body was embalmed and brought here, reaching here Thursday morning early. Mr. Kimsey was doubtless very much excited with the spirit of the hunt or he would certainly have distinguished a man from a bear only thirty yards away, unless the brush was extraordinarily dense, which we are assured was the case. The ball entered at the right side of back and ranged upward and through the left breast making a very ugly wound. Mr. Dempsey in company with two of his brothers came to this state a little over a year ago, we believe from Knox County, Illinois, and was the nephew of Mr. I. I. Dempsey (Isaac Iddings) of Dixie. One of his brothers (John) died last winter, or fall rather, and was interred in the Burch graveyard near Dixie where William was interred yesterday, by the Good Templers of this city, of which lodge he was an honored member. He was greatly esteemed by all who know him and his late companions feel a severe loss and regret in his death. This is but another instance which avows the fact that too much caution in the use of firearms cannot be taken by those handling them.
